Karate is an excellent sport for young people wanting to learn discipline and strength. The values of courtesy, integrity and self-control are taught to karate students. What’s more, karate is a great way of learning self-defence techniques.

Karate involves punches, kicks and open hands to block strikes.

Karate lessons are divided into three aspects: kihon (the basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

In karate you work towards earning belts. The lowest rank belt is a white belt. As students develop their skills they move up levels and earn higher-level belts. Higher belts are earned by passing a test. As the learner moves up through the ranks they become more skilled at karate. A coach will guide students through the process of preparing for each new belt.

With the help of a karate coach learners will master position and stance, balance and co-ordination. Working on form is an important part of karate. As form progresses students also work on their speed and power.

Karate is a popular sport amongst school age children who learn discipline and how to remain calm under pressure. These are great skills for any child to learn, along with the ability to improve strength and fitness.

Sensei (meaning “teacher”) is a term often used for a karate coach. A Sensei has knowledge and is willing to pass it on. A Sensei teaches at a dojo – meaning a room or hall where karate is taught.

Karate is generally taught in a class environment with a number of people learning the skill at once.
